It seems like a hobo threw a cigarette around an Internet2 (no, that’s not a typo) fiber optic line, which burned through it, disabling it for a projected 1-2 days, smart IT got it back up in a short 4 hours. Internet2 was not designed with the reliability the normal net we use is, it was designed with speed in mind. They have reached speeds upwards of 9 Gbps(that’s not a typo either), but that speed comes at a price. The Internet2 doesn’t have redundancy(a backup line so you are never completely disconnected).
